Update: Fair Exposure and Popular Browse Fair Exposure and miscategorization On January 24th, 2012, we released an #hq journal regarding Popular results for Browse. In this journal, we described Fair Exposure -- deviantART's algorithm for Popular browse results. Fair Exposure's goal is to showcase the most popular deviations in a variety of styles, genres, and art forms, without bias towards a particular topic. Since the release of our Fair Exposure announcement, especially in the last handful of weeks, we've noticed a concerted, dedicated effort made by deviants, or groups of deviants, to specifically beat (or "game") the system. Deviations have been intentionally miscategorized in hopes of having them appear "higher" in Popular results. This has, rightfully so, resulted in complaints from deviants who submit to deviantART in a fair and honest manner.

Gallery Description ProjectMost of you probably are aware that deviantART has a lot of categories. As you've seen over the past few months, we volunteers, in coordination with $Moonbeam13, often help to orchestrate various changes in category structure in order to make the submission and browsing experiences simpler and more advantageous for the community. That said, there's another aspect of categories which, sadly, often have been overlooked. I'm referring to the Gallery Descriptions. Over time, gallery descriptions have fallen into disarray, leaving many categories with old and outdated descriptions, others with incorrect descriptions, and yet others without a description at all. At the moment, gallery descriptions are most prominent when submitting new deviations. However, as part of this project, we hope that they will become more evident as you browse the site. One of our goals is to make a simple, navigable category structure focusing on descriptions that are clear, concise, and consistent. Gallery Description Project by $haldron

FailureWell, this is awkward. So, I guess my plan had some minor flaws. Namely that when you tie up deviantART staff with yarn and lock them in their office supply closet, they can use scissors and letter openers to break free. I even put a mirror on the inside of the door to confuse them! How did they know that was the way out? They're some smart humans. They broke free, activated their laser pointers, and regained control of the servers and databases while we were dreadfully distracted. Now, everything is back to normal on deviantART. Worst of all, they said we "were very, very bad" and that they were "disappointed in us". That guilt is hard to live with, my friends. We're back to drawing board now. No, we won't give up hope of total world domination. We're so close, I can feel it! Watch out, world! This isn't the last you'll see of FUR. But world domination will have to wait until another day.
